Playa del Carmen travel made easy

If you're planning to travel in the Yucatan, you'll arrive into Cancun Airport. We don't think Cancun is the best place to spend your first two nights in Mexico, so we suggest Playa del Carmen, only an hour south of Cancun. Playa del Carmen is located directly on a beautiful white sandy beach (particularly quiet along the far ends) so you'll quickly get into the holiday spirit. You'll hear mariachis singing in the streets and salsa music coming from the tequila and burrito stalls along the lively Avenida Quinta. Along the beach the theme is rather more laid-back with mellow reggae and lounge music.

After your Playa del Carmen Starter Pack, you will begin your trip round the Mexican Yucatan peninsula. You can always come back at the end of your trip for a few more days on the beach at either Playa del Carmen or Tulum.

On arrival at Cancun Airport you'll met in the arrivals hall by our local representative. Customs and baggage reclaim is usually quite swift so you should be at your hotel in Playa within 1½ hours of landing. You'll spend 2 nights here, recovering from your journey and soaking up some sun.

You can spend your time chilling on the beach, acclimatising to the tropical climate and adjusting to the different time zone. Towel and book in hand, just settle yourself in the warm white sand and stretch out in the Mexican sun. At lunchtime, head to one of the little beach bars. The Quinta Avenida, the main shopping street in Playa is lively place with plenty to see and do, particularly in the evening. If salsa's your thing, then Mambo is the place to be...

Comfortable hotels

Our favourite hotels in Playa del Carmen are very central, at approx 200-300 metres from the broad beaches. The Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue), the popular shopping and entertainment street in Playa is close by. Our hotels have very friendly staff, but often no pool. of the smaller hotels have a small lobby with a patio or tiny garden with a pool, though these are usually very small. However, with the beach and the sparkling sea next door, you'll find that you don't need a pool probably won't anyway. Rooms are clean and tiny with shower, toilet and a/c and some with balconies.

From Playa del Carmen, you can begin your Mexico trip with our module Yellow Town by Horse and Carriage to Chichèn Itza. Or, if you want to spend more of your time in the North Yucatan, Hidden Cenotes and Mayan Pyramids offers a slightly more extensive itinerary.

Alternative, if you fancy kicking off your trip with a visit to a beautiful nature reserve, you can first do Bathe with the Pink Flamingo and continue your trip with Yellow Town by Horse and Carriage or the Hidden Cenotes and Mayan Pyramids module.
