About Mexico Travel Plan

Mexico Travel Plan is a small specialist internet based tour operator, offering you a unique way of travelling around Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. Our Mexico travel specialists will help you build your own trip, handing you complete control of your holiday. As travel specialists, we pride ourselves on providing excellent service levels which continue throughout the life of your booking.

Mexico Travel Plan is part of Rickshaw Travel, an online adventure tour operator made by travellers for travellers. It is born out of the idea that there are hardly any independent travel options available for more adventurous travellers.

Our trips are very individual, so we're able to use small-scale, authentic accommodation with local character and warm welcomes. With Rickshaw Travel, you won't find large group coach tours but instead you'll travel by trains, buses, private car, planes, and sometimes minibus. Flexibility and independence are fundamental, which is why we organise as much or as little as our clients wish.

We also like to give something back to local communities, which is why we sponsor various charity projects. See our responsible travel page for more information.

We're able to keep our prices low because we don't produce flashy brochures or run luxury shops. However you're more than welcome to visit our Mexico travel specialists during your itinerary planning! We are based in Brighton, on the South Coast and we're the sister company of round the world specialists, Travel Nation.

I became obsessed with all things Spanish and Latino during my first trip to Latin America in 2004 which finished up in Mexico. Besides the gorgeous Guacamole I just loved the Mayan ruins, Mariachi bands, Margaritas, markets and the friendly Mexican people. In 2005 I began working as a Tour Leader in Central America and the Mayan Loop of Mexico, Guatemala and Belize was always my favourite place. The varying shades of the turquoise Caribbean never fail to blow me away!

As well as the idyllic beaches I loved exploring ancient Mayan ruins deep in the steamy jungles and snorkelling with sting rays and nurse sharks on the world’s second longest barrier reef. For me the best part of travel is experiencing local life and culture, so to rub shoulders and practise Spanish with the locals in the cobbled colonial cities of Antigua, San Cristobal de las Casas and Merida was unforgettable.

Before I visited central America, it always seemed a distant place of dense jungles, palm-fringed beaches and Tequila slammers. After spending a month travelling Mexico, Guatemala and Belize, I can safely say it exceeded all my expectations.

The day my shoes melted climbing a Guatemalan volcano I fell in love with the place. Where else in the world can you walk on an active lava flow, explore ancient Mayan ruins buried deep in tropical jungles, and relax on beaches washed by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean? I almost don’t feel like I need to mention the bustling markets of Chichicastenango, the chilled out mountain hideaway of San Cristobal De Las Casas, or the island paradise that is Caye Caulker...

A month in Mexico in 1998 was my first taste of Latin America, and how it has stayed with me all these years.

I spent a few days in Mexico city whizzing around in the national green beetle taxi's seeing the sites such as Teotihuacan. Next up was the wonderful old colonial city of Oaxaca, and the amazing ruins of Monte Alban. After this I allowed myself a week or so lazing on a beautiful beach where I was lucky enough to experience a genuine local fiesta with not another tourist in sight. The fantastically colourful and noisy atmosphere was pure Mexican. I ended up in the cultural town of San Cristobal in the misty highlands, and it's feel of by-gone eras.

In 2009 I returned to the Yucatan area of Mexico with my family and booked our trip with Mexico Travel Plan. Read more about this by clicking here.

Haydn Wrath

Manager

Mexico Travel Plan is run by Haydn Wrath.

I left the University of East Anglia in 1984 and escaped what seemed a very grim England by spending the rest of the 1980s travelling independently and working myself round the world. During this time I put in some usual stints as an English teacher in Tokyo, a landscape gardener in Sydney and a tarmac layer's assistant in Alaska. In 1990, I joined Bridge the World Travel Centre in London as manager of the World-wide department, where I was able to put my degree in Politics and Philosophy to good use.

I fulfilled my ambition to set up a specialist travel company in 2001 when I founded Travel Nation, and later in 2007 set up Rickshaw Travel and Mexico Travel Plan.
