Mexico City travel made easy - The Zocalo

Easy Going Mexico City

Mexico City is beautiful but chaotic. Mexico's capital city, nestled in a valley between volcanic hills, tends to get mixed reviews. While it may be a city with problems, it is most definitely a city with charms. Amidst the 20 million inhabitants, you may feel somewhat tiny, but we didn't feel unsafe at all, sometimes which often worries prospective travellers to the city. There's so much to see: imposing colonial palaces and cathedrals, the frenzied traffic, the peaceful squares and green parks where old men on park benches discuss life and politics.

"Ciudad de México Distrito Federal", or 'DF' as Mexico City is usually called, lies at a pleasant 2240m elevation. We've arranged accommodation for you in the Centro Historico. That way you'll be in the heart of the city and whichever direction you go you'll come across a park, a palace, a museum, a plaza, fountains, etc. If you want to go shopping and enjoy the local nightlife you could also stay in the Zona Rosa. After beginning your trip with our Mexico City Starter Pack, we can definitely recommend our Colonial Cultures overland.

Easy going Mexico City: Zona Rosa Hotel

Zona Rosa may sound a little dodgy, but it is in fact one of the trendiest nightlife district and the gathering place of Mexico City's in-crowd. This lively district offers plenty of entertainment with its many shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs and is totally different to the historic centre.

If you want to stay in this area, we can book a hotel at a great location: the Hotel Principado has the major shops and restaurants right on its doorstep. Rooms have TV and phone. The Zona Rosa is located between the historic centre and the Bosque de Chapultepec and from here it's a 20-minute walk along the Paseo de la Reforma to the Alameda.

Mexico City travel made easy - The Museo d'Antropologia

The Museo d'Antropologia should definitely be on your agenda during your Mexico City. The museum has a spectacular collection of artefacts from all the different cultures of Mexico. The ruins and ancient cities you'll visit further on in your trip will have a lot more meaning when you've visited this museum and learnt more about the history and background of these places and the people that once lived there.

Next door to the museum is the Bosque de Chapultepec, the biggest park in Mexico City. A walk through the park is a pleasant way to mix in some nature and fresh air with all your cultural activities. You can even rent a rowing boat, not something you'd expect in such a huge metropol.

When you're in the Bosque be sure to stop off at Restaurant Havana for some great food and coffee.

The pyramids of Teotihuacan are an hour's drive from Mexico City. Plan about half a day for a visit. The site was probably the birthplace of what is now Mexico City and was once the largest city of the Aztecs. The complex is dominated by two colossal pyramids, of which the Piramide del Sol is the highest (surpassed only by the Cheops in Egypt), but the Piramide de la Luna is the most beautiful.

You can climb the Pyramid of the Sun to get a beautiful view across the city and the Pyramid of the Moon. It's gruelling though; at this elevation the climb is all the more strenuous. At the top you can look out over the temple of Quetzalcóatl, the Avenue of the Dead and the Pyramid of the Moon, the green hills in the background and huge, colourful butterflies fluttering around you.
