Mayan Riviera - Playa del Carmen and Tulum (all-inclusive hotels)
|
All-inclusive beach hotelsMore and more hotels along the Mayan Riviera are jumping on the all-inclusive bandwagon; all meals, snacks, (local) drinks and most of the sports facilities are included in your stay. The advantage of an all-inclusive deal is that you won't have any unexpected additional costs and that it could in fact save you money if you make optimal use of the facilities (say for example if you're accompanied by two hungry teenagers), The downside however is that you're pretty much stuck to your hotel for meals and activities and many of these types of hotels can be a little soulless and 'mechanical'. Also, most operators request one-week minimum stay, whereas you may only be planning on staying a couple of days. |
Our Mayan Riviera selectionBecause we increasingly get requests for hotels offering a little more luxury and with meals included, we've selected the hotels where we felt most comfortable ourselves. No the colossal Riu style hotels, but two hotels in Playa del Carmen and one in Tulum which we feel really add something to our itineraries. They're all very different and we've outlined the pros and cons of each. Booking early is still a must especially if like many of our travellers you're planning on staying less than a week (but a minimum of 3 nights). |

Pros... * The hotel itself: almost 400 rooms but without feeling too large-scale. The cheerfully painted rooms are set around small courtyards throughout the garden. The hotel has been around for a number of years which means the garden is fully grown (and relatively little damage caused by the last hurricane) * Previously run by Italians, so meals are exceptionally good (we had the best espresso we'd tasted on the coast) * Beautiful, broad, quiet beach and no colossal dining halls * Mixed clientele and lots of different nationalities, giving it a pleasant international atmosphere. Our favourite. Cons... * The rooms (all with garden view and identical) are spacious but the furniture is somewhat dated and needs replacing. No bath but great shower. * Distance to Playa is 15km, taxi ride costs roughly US$17,-. Not the best choice if you want to be close to the nightlife. |
2. The Reef Playacar - all-inclusive resort within walking distance from central Playa del CarmenThis is a small-scale (approx 200 rooms) all-inclusive hotel in the hotel district Playacar, directly adjacent to Playa. Officially a 4-star, though we'd give it 3½ stars. Includes all meals (buffet but with two a la buggye restaurants), snacks, local drinks, kids club age 4-12, introductory diving lessons, tennis, cycling, sailing, kayaking, surfing, daily hotel activities and entertainment. The hotel has three restaurants, two bars, two medium-sizes pools (with kids area) and several outdoor terraces. Surcharge applies for spa/massage and the a la buggye restaurant. Rooms are comfortable and spacious, with king-size or two queen-size beds, a/c, TV, fridge and a lovely balcony or terrace with seats and garden view. |

Pros... * Not as huge as other all-inclusive hotels near Playa del Carmen * Walking distance to nightlife district, but without the noise, golf course across the road * Beautiful gardens and hotel built in cheerful Mexican style * Affordable and above-average level of service Cons... * Beach not too impressive (largely washed away during last hurricane) though it is being improved For paradise Caribbean beaches you'll need to take the car or taxi * Location of the beach; jammed in between other hotels though you don't really notice this in the hotel itself |
3. Tulum: Deluxe pampering in resort DreamsThis is a recently opened, medium-sized (275 rooms) deluxe hotel under Dutch management. It's very modern and state-of-the-art but with a small-scale feel thanks to the colonial architecture. If you're looking for 5-star luxury, then this is the right choice. Several of the rooms are laid out in horseshoe shape facing the beach with sea view, others are located in colonial-style courtyards in the huge garden. Rooms have king-size or 2 queen-size beds, TV, minibar, a/c, phone, CD/DVD player, coffee and tea-making facilities, safe and a bathroom with all the bells and whistles. The hotel has a buffet restaurant and 6 smaller, cosier restaurants (all meals, snacks and local drinks are included), large pool and freshwater source, 6 tennis courts and if you're blessed with parents who've booked here, one of the most luxury kids clubs you can imagine. Entertainment, kids clubs, surfing, sailing, kayaking, snorkelling, cycling, introductory diving lesson are all included. |

Pros... * Real 5-star luxury and all-inclusive without compromise. Emphasis on comfort and pampering, well worth the money Cons... * Large hotel complex, a lot of walking involved * New, so gardens & greenery not quite mature * 'Cool' luxury atmosphere which doesn't quite fit in with low-key Tulum. |
