Easy Going Cancun

Many of our travellers stay in lively Cancun, near the Yucatan's main airport for just one night, or not at all. There are two options: Cancun Downtown, or the Zona Hotelera, which is slightly out of town where you'll find all of the large hotel chains located between the Caribbean sea and the Nichupte Lagoon (see image).

If you want to spend a couple of extra days on the beach when you arrive, we highly recommend a Playa del Carmen starter pack, a popular tourist beach resort one hour south of Cancun.

Cancun Travel Made Easy : Zona Hotelera

As an alternative to Downtown Cancun, you could choose the so-called Zona Hotellera, or hotel zone. This is a long row of American high-rise hotels and resorts lined up along a narrow peninsula 10km outside the city centre and 20 minutes from the airport. We've selected a small four-star hotel on the lagoon side of the peninsula, which is a good choice if you're looking for a comfortable beach hotel when you arrive. The hotel has a nice garden with sun beds and views of the lagoon, a pool, terrace with bar and outdoor breakfast space, a restaurant, a gym and a tennis court.

Your room will have a double bed, a bathroom with bath/shower, toilet, TV, balcony as well as air conditioning, fan radio and tea & coffee making facilities. There are also studios with a kitchenette and suites for 4-6 persons available, ideal if you're travelling with a family. It's a great choice if you want a little more luxury for your first night(s) but don't want to be in Playa, for example because you may be going there later anyway.

Downtown Cancun is built with cars in mind. The busy roads make strolling through the centre a bit of an experience except around the Avenida Yaxchilan. This is where you'll find several tourist hotels, bars and restaurants. It's quite busy and therefore probably more suitable for a last night before you head home than as your first introduction to Mexican culture.

Our Cancun Starter Packs, offer several hotel choices along the Avenida Yaxchilan or just outside: they're comfortable tourist class hotels with all the facilities such as shower, toilet, air conditioning, bar or restaurant and a pool (see below). Rooms have two double beds, shower, toilets, TV, a/c and fan. Breakfast is not included.
